Unlike China, India will not restrict play time for online games, confirms Government official

India has no plans to restrict the time spent on online games. This statement comes from Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the minister of state for electronics and information technology. Recently China had been imposing several bans on the gaming industry, but India reportedly has no intentions of imposing the same bans. Mr. Chandrasekhar stated that he is aware of the threats that online gaming poses and the Indian Government is aware of them too, these dangers can lead to “violence abetting video games, addiction to it, and consequential financial loss.” he concluded.

Government Official says there would be no laws passed

Mr. Chandrasekhar stated that there would be no laws formulated to restrict the gaming industry and India will not restrict online games until gaming companies follow the Information Technology rules of 2021 and ensure that no harm is being done to children, revealed in a latest report by Economic Times.

Chandrashekhar responded to questions from MPs Vishnu Dutt Sharma and Bhagirath Chaudhary, the questions all had a similar agenda of whether the Indian Government would consider placing bans on online gaming.

While replying to the questions asked by MPs Vishnu Dutt Sharma and Bhagirath Chaudhary, Mr. Chandrasekhar said “The rules cast a specific obligation on intermediaries to observe due diligence by making reasonable efforts to cause its user not to host, display, publish, transmit or share any information that is harmful to the child, causes incitement to the commission of any cognizable offense, relates to encourages gambling, or violates any law for the time being in force”

Last year China created headlines after they placed bans on the gaming industry regarding play time, many games and developers had to scale their operations according to the laws in China. Recently India did ban a total of 54 applications from Google Play but that was due to different reasons.
