The Callisto Protocol Gets Second Patch to Further Reduce PC Stuttering

A new update begins rolling out for The Callisto Protocol, coming soon after the Day One patch, which aims to fix issues with the PC version.

A new update for The Callisto Protocol has already started rolling out, with the developer clearly keen to fix the stuttering issues that disgruntled PC users have been experiencing since the game launched. Originally touted as a spiritual successor to Dead Space, Striking Distance Studios’ maiden release was one of the most anticipated horror games of this generation. Sadly, despite the hype, there’s been significant backlash, with many fans leaving negative reviews on Steam, particularly in regard to performance problems.

The Callisto Protocol has been receiving mixed reviews, but things looked to be much worse than that. Due to the stuttering issues, especially on the PC version, many began to review bomb the game, with it initially showing a “mostly negative” user rating on Steam. Other minuses to the game include its lack of replay value and the story being quite short. However, it still seems to be selling well, though fans will no doubt be hoping that additional fixes will be inbound, and the developer has already rushed out a second patch.

In this latest update, Striking Distance is continuing in its pursuit to stomp out the stuttering issues that have been annoying a lot of The Callisto Protocol players. In a post on the game’s Steam page, the developer says it has been listening to feedback and this new patch aims to “further optimize PC performance.” As well as reducing the stuttering problems, it also improves PSO, or Pipeline State Object, caching, which is the tool that helps to reduce load times on Unreal Engine 4 games. With both of these combined, hopefully the PC version will run a lot smoother. The post also says that further patches will be coming soon for both PC and console.

Shortly after its release on December 2, The Callisto Protocol received a day one patch to try and sort out the major issues many had been experiencing. It has been a point of contention for fans, not only because so many were looking forward to the survival horror title, but because it perpetuates broader issues in the industry in which AAA games are being released in poor or even unfinished states.

Director Glen Schofield immediately came forward when the game launched to say that The Callisto Protocol issues were due to a clerical error, adding that there was a lot going on at the studio. In any case, it seems as though the developer is seeking to fix the main problems, so hopefully things will turn out better for the much-anticipated horror title.

The Callisto Protocol is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
