Welcome to the High Score Esports College Players Interview Series!
Today, we’re talking to Lukas “Occam” Biel, who plays on the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate team for Aquinas Esports. See how he got started, how he leads his team to victory, and what tips he has for players who want to join college teams!
Thanks to Aquinas Esports Head Coach Adam Antor for giving us access to his players!
What first got you into games?
I’ve played games since I was a kid. There was plenty of competition between me and my brother, so I’ve spent a lot of time playing. When I’m not studying for school or busy with other commitments, I usually play video games to pass time.
What drew you to Smash?
I played quite a bit of Smash back in the day, including a lot of Brawl and a little bit of Melee. I really got into Ultimate because of my friends at here at AQ. I would play with them and, after a while, we began to get better and better at the game, so we ended up trying out for the AQ Smash team.
Which character do you main? What is it about them that you like?
I play Falco. I’ve always liked his playstyle and it’s something I would like to get better with as I start my esports career.
Do you prefer to play a more defensive style or an aggressive style? Why?
I play a more defensive style on the ground and a more aggressive style in the air. In Smash, you always want to play with the strengths and weaknesses of your main in mind, so this is how I play Falco.
What do you see as your team’s main advantage?
We have a lot of talented players on the team right now who are easy to work with and eager to learn. With this, we can focus our training and improve our game in order to achieve our best performances in tournament play.
What advice do you have for younger players who are hoping to join a college team?
Do your research on the game you’re playing. It’s always helpful to have knowledge that can teach you more about the game. Sometimes, you may learn a few things that you didn’t know about while playing the game normally. This research includes reading guides, looking up YouTube videos and watching other professional esports teams playing, and other things as well.
When you’re not practicing Smash or studying, what games do you play?
I’m a pretty avid fan strategy games like Age of Empires 2 when I was a kid. Right now, one of my favorite series of games is the Grand Strategies games created by Paradox studios, Crusader Kings II and Victoria II. When I want to turn my brain off for an hour or two, I play FPS games as well.
