In June 2022 in North America, Sony launched a revamped version of PlayStation Plus that combines the previous model with PS Now. Split into three tiers, subscribers who invest in PS Plus Extra or Premium gain access to a wide selection of PlayStation games. While the library mainly consists of PS4 titles, it also includes quite a few PS5 releases, something PS Now did not offer.
The addition of current-gen games is perhaps the new PS Plus’s greatest selling point, and the fact July’s Stray debuted directly on Sony’s service suggests that launch-day releases are on the cards. What are the best PS5 games on PS Plus Extra?
If available, links to a game’s Amazon page will be included just in case someone prefers to own a physical copy.
Deathloop

Genre |
First-Person Shooter |
Developer |
Arkane Studios |
Release Date |
September 14, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Added to PS Plus Extra on September 20, 2022, Deathloop is an FPS built upon a time loop concept. Players are cast as Colt, an assassin who must take out eight targets within a single day. If he fails, the day restarts from scratch, and this reset is part of the story and not just a mechanic. Producing Dishonored and Prey, Arkane is known for its creative shooters that blend enjoyable gunplay with versatile powers and stealth, all things that are part of Deathloop‘s blueprint.
An argument could be made that the 2021 release is Arkane’s strongest effort to date, particularly in terms of gameplay. Designed to be replayed, Deathloop has a puzzle-style element to it as players gradually accumulate information as they pave their way to a perfect run. The story is also quite good and develops nicely as the campaign progresses.
Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |

Capcom |
Release Date |
November 10, 2020 |
Amazon Listing Page |
PS Plus Extra’s January 2023 additions included a couple of PS5 games, with the biggest title being undoubtedly Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. More than a decade after the release of DMC 4, Capcom finally blessed the world with a proper sequel, the release more than lived up to the hype. The base game features three playable characters – Nero, Dante, and V – who all control completely differently from each other.
Consequently, the campaign barely ever has a dull moment since it is constantly switching combat systems, with each one offering a fair amount of depth. The Special Edition takes things to the next level by throwing Vergil into the mix, and the legendary character is a delight in battle. DMC 5 is a must-play for any action fan, and it is comfortably among the best PS5 PS Plus games.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
38 Hours (Including Episode INTERmission) |
---|---|
Genre |
Action JRPG |
Developer |
Square Enix |
Release Date |
June 10, 2021 |
As the first post-launch additions, Sony needed to knock PS Plus Premium and Extra’s July 19 line-up out of the park to demonstrate its commitment to the subscription service. And, for the most part, the selection delivered the goods, particularly for fans of Ubisoft and Square Enix. Except for a Day One release, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade was the biggest newcomer; in fact, this JRPG is good enough to warrant a one-month subscription on its own.
Intergrade contains the 2020 base game and its Episode INTERmission DLC that introduces Yuffie as a playable character. As a whole, this package should keep someone busy for quite a while, and that’s if they only focus on the main story. With addictive real-time combat, gorgeous visuals, and a gripping story that changes a few things from the classic 1997 game, FF7 Remake Intergrade is a contender for the best PS5 game on PS Plus.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
N/A |
---|---|
Genre |
First-Person Shooter, Multiplayer |
Developer |
Ubisoft Montreal |
Release Date |
December 1, 2020 (PS5) |
Amazon Listing Page |
PS Plus has been adding a couple of Ubisoft games every month, most of which fall within the open-world genre; however, one of the very best additions to the service is an exception. Debuting in 2015 on last-gen consoles and PC, Rainbow Six Siege has more than proven its staying power. The multiplayer-focused tactical shooter pits two teams against each other in cutthroat battles that leave little room for error. The gameplay is considerably faster than most shooters under the Tom Clancy umbrella, a distinction that has served the game well over the last few years.
At this point in its existence, Rainbow Six Siege has a firmly established playerbase who know its ins and outs like the back of their hands. Consequently, newcomers are likely to feel overwhelmed during their few (dozen) matches. The game comes with a steeper learning curve than most mainstream shooters on the market, but it is arguably worth the effort.
The Medium
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
8 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Psychological Horror |
Developer |
Bloober Team |
Release Date |
September 3, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Added to PS Plus Extra in time for Halloween, The Medium extends Bloober Team’s impressive catalog of horror games, a run that resulted in the developer landing the Silent Hill 2 remake. Although not the scariest project in the company’s resume, The Medium is arguably Bloober’s most complete and satisfying release, with its main competitor being Observer: System Redux (which is also on PS Plus Extra).
As implied by its title, the story revolves around a medium who can leave behind the mortal plane to walk among the spirits. This ability is a key mechanic in The Medium, as the game frequently splits the screen in two so that players can follow Marianne, the protagonist, while she exists in both realms. A few short encounters aside, The Medium primarily focuses on exploration and puzzles rather than action, a decision that fits well with the personal story the game tries to tell.
Metro Exodus
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
15 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
FPS |
Developer |
4A Games |
Release Date |
June 18, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
An August 2022 addition to PS Plus, Metro Exodus‘ arrival means that Premium subscribers now have access to the full trilogy. Meanwhile, Extra members can at least experience the most recent project in 4A Games’ FPS franchise. As a shooter, Metro moves at a slower pace than most of its contemporaries, opting to incorporate elements of the survival genre into its campaign.
Metro Exodus is the most expansive entry in the license, and it even includes a few open sections that provide some space for exploration. These sequences are enjoyable, but the game shines the brightest when it forces players underground and into tight corridors lurking with enemies.
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |

Open-World RPG |

Bethesda Game Studios |
Available With PS Plus Extra |

Skyrim has survived three console generations, and Bethesda’s RPG continues to feel like a big deal. While PS Plus Extra’s November 2022 line-up was headlined by Kingdom Hearts, it would not be surprising if Skyrim gets the most downloads now that it is on Sony’s subscription service.
Along with remastering the 2011 version, the Special Edition also includes the DLC, specifically Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn. Therefore, players who have only experienced the vanilla game should have a lot of fresh content to play through if they decide to install the RPG. Even if some aspects feel dated when compared with more modern games, Skyrim‘s immaculate world, customization options, and storytelling hold up beautifully.
Stray
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
5 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Adventure |
Developer |
BlueTwelve Studio |
Release Date |
July 19, 2022 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Stray is noteworthy for being PS Plus Premium and Extra’s first Day One title (not counting Shadow Warrior 3 on PS Now). Presuming history does not prove this release to be a one-off deal, Stray‘s existence marks a step in the right direction for Sony’s service.
That said, it would be a disservice to credit the inclusion of BlueTwelve’s project in this rundown of PS Plus Extra’s best PlayStation 5 games solely to its debut status. A third-person adventure game played from the perspective of a cat, Stray looks ambitious, beautiful, and charming. The story takes place in an open-world cyberpunk city and the gameplay focuses primarily on exploration and puzzle-solving.
Dead By Daylight
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
N/A |
---|---|
Genre |
4v1 Survival Horror |

Behaviour Digital |
Release Date |
November 12, 2020 |
Dead by Daylight is one of the most popular multiplayer games of the last few years, and its frequent updates and expansions have kept the project in the public discourse.
Four Survivors must work together to turn on generators and escape before they are hunted down by a Killer. Players are free to pick from a wide selection of both Survivors and Killers, all of which come with unique abilities that greatly alter the flow of matches. Dead by Daylight‘s roster includes quite a few iconic faces, including Silent Hill‘s Pyramid Head, Hellraiser‘s Pinhead, and The Ring‘s Sadako Yamamura.
Evil Genius 2: World Domination
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
30 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Real-Time Strategy |
Developer |
Rebellion Developments |
Release Date |
November 30, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Added in December 2022, Evil Genius 2 expands PS Plus Extra’s roster of strategy games, all the while also serving as an option for simulation fans. Featuring four playable geniuses, players must construct a lair for their evil enterprise as they seek to craft a doomsday device. In the meantime, they will need to expand their organization’s reach, protect and grow their base, and acquire funding.
Evil Genius 2 has a great sense of humor, deep but accessible-for-the-genre gameplay, and a visual style reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons. Although an acquired taste, Rebellion’s title is a solid entry point into both the strategy and simulation genres, especially if someone loves spy thrillers.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
45 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Turn-Based JRPG |
Developer |
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio |
Release Date |
March 2, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
December 2022 added two PS5 Yakuza games to PS Plus Extra: Like a Dragon and the Judgment spin-off. The latter is a stellar detective game that retains Yakuza‘s classic beat-’em-up combat, making it a suitable pick for people who prefer the franchise’s older style of gameplay. Conversely, Yakuza: Like a Dragon marked a new chapter in the license’s history while still being a mainline entry. Rather than Kazuma Kiryu, the story revolves around Ichiban Kasuga, a goofy but lovable Yakuza member with aspirations of heroism.
Like a Dragon uses a turn-based combat system akin to something like Dragon Quest; in fact, the game makes a few direct references to Square Enix’s franchise. As always, Yakuza lives and dies by the strength of its writing, and Like a Dragon compares favorably to any entry in the series. The primary storyline instantly sinks its teeth into viewers, and it does not let go until the credits roll. The side quests are also good fun, and they are equally likely to be hilarious or heartbreaking.
Returnal
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
20 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Roguelike |
Developer |
Housemarque |
Release Date |
April 30, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Housemarque’s Returnal is a sci-fi epic about Selene, a space traveler who visits a strange planet and becomes ensnared in a time loop. This plot point serves as narrative justification for the third-person shooter’s roguelike structure; as Selene explores Atropos’ six biomes, her demise will signal a return to the beginning.
Returnal has fantastic gameplay, which is hardly surprising considering the studio’s previous releases like Alienation. The story builds an engrossing sense of mystery while cleverly diving into Selene’s history and mental state.
Demon’s Souls
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
25 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Action RPG |
Developer |
Bluepoint Games |
Release Date |
November 12, 2020 |
Amazon Listing Page |
When the PlayStation 5 debuted, Bluepoint’s Demon’s Souls remake was the main reason to pick up the console. Since then Sony’s system has welcomed quite a few great projects, but this launch title continues to be one of the PS5’s crowning achievements.
FromSoftware’s 2009 original is also on PS Plus Premium, and as game-changing as that PS3 classic is, the remake’s improved gameplay and enhanced environments make it the version most worth playing on the subscription service.
The Pedestrian
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
4 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Puzzle-Platformer |
Developer |
Skookum Arts LLC |
Release Date |
January 29, 2021 |
PS Plus Extra’s December 2022 line-up had a number of high-profile games that undoubtedly overshadowed The Pedestrian, a small indie title. That said, if someone is craving a unique puzzle-platformer, Skookum Arts’ project sits comfortably among PS Plus’s greatest options. The game’s selling point is that all the puzzles are presented on road or work signs, and players will need to think outside the box to find their solutions.
The Pedestrian does not have much narrative drive and can get a touch repetitive, but it is a fun game to throw on in between lengthier projects. The puzzles are well-designed and challenging enough to be engaging without requiring a guide to figure them out.
Control: Ultimate Edition
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
13 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Action-Adventure |
Developer |
Remedy Entertainment |
Release Date |
February 2, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Remedy Entertainment has a track record of producing ambitious games with addictive combat and fascinating stories. In many ways, Control represents the studio at its best and most intriguing. The game is set in the Federal Bureau of Control, a government building devoted to investigating and storing the strange and otherworldly; unsurprisingly, things go desperately wrong and it is up to Jesse Faden to clean up the mess.
Armed with a shape-shifting gun and an array of satisfying powers, Jesse traverses the FBC’s halls as reality twists and turns around her. Control‘s gameplay is incredible, and this world’s lore demands to be explored.
Ghostrunner
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
8 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
First-Person Action |
Developers |
One More Level, 3D Realms, Slipgate Ironworks |
Release Date |
October 27, 2020 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Ghostrunner casts players as Jack, an amnesiac who is given a rescue mission that involves traversing a cyberpunk skyscraper. Although its lore and world are quite interesting, this title is ultimately about its gameplay, which blends precise melee combat with platforming.
In Ghostunner, encounters are generally decided by a solitary hit, with both Jack and enemies being glass cannons. Consequently, players must strategize the best ways to approach situations in order to allow them to take out targets with a single move, making each battle a nail-biting game of chess.
Back 4 Blood
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
12 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
First-Person Shooter |
Developers |
Turtle Rock Studios |
Release Date |
October 12, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Reminiscent of games such as Left 4 Dead, Back 4 Blood pits up to 4-players against hordes of monsters known as The Ridden. The game is naturally designed with co-op in mind, although AI-controlled teammates are an option for people who want a solo experience. Back 4 Blood wears its inspiration on its sleeve, and while it does not quite reach the heights seen by Valve’s classic, the 2021 title is a respectable alternative.
A unique feature is the implementation of a card system that allows players to customize their character’s stats prior to a mission. There are even Corruption Cards that modify a level’s challenges, allowing repeat playthroughs to have a degree of originality.
Chorus
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
15 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Space Simulator |
Developers |
Deep Silver Fishlabs |
Release Date |
December 3, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
A space combat sim, Chorus casts players as Nara, a capable fighter who swaps sides and joins the resistance. The story is by no means bad, but this game lives and dies on the strength of its combat. Thankfully, Chorus delivers the goods in this area, offering speed, maneuverability, and challenge.
Although not a big-budget title, Chorus is quite a looker in places. The open-world game does a great job of diversifying its environments, so while the campaign is set in space, the map constantly shakes things up to ensure that it remains visually fascinating.
Assetto Corsa Competizione
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
12 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Racing |
Developer |
Kunos Simulazioni |
Release Date |
October 26, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Racing games are simultaneously extremely popular and also niche, and that goes double for sims. Assetto Corsa Competizione is a contender for the genre’s least accessible entry as the game comes with a steep learning curve. Drivers looking to stand a chance in this GT-focused racer will need to dedicate a great deal of time to not only master their chosen vehicle but also the tracks they will be competing on.
That said, Assetto Corsa Competizione‘s attention to detail is admirable, and the same praise can be given to its graphics. Along with a solo career mode, the game also supports online play, so people who become enamored with this racer have a fair amount of content to go through.
Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
18 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Action |
Developer |
Eidos Montreal |
Release Date |
October 26, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Following the disappointing Marvel’s Avengers, one would have been forgiven for being skeptical about Square Enix’s Guardians of the Galaxy; thankfully, this single-player game is far superior to its live-service sibling. As Star-Lord, players get to experience a planet-hopping adventure packed with humor, action, and flashes of emotion.
While it is a bit disappointing that only Peter Quill is playable, GOTG‘s combat system blossoms nicely as the campaign progresses and players become more familiar with its intricacies. Narratively, this game should please both fans of the comics and the MCU movies.
Mortal Kombat 11
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
8 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Fighting |
Developer |
NetherRealm Studios |
Release Date |
November 17, 2020 |
Amazon Listing Page |
NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat 11 was a contender for the best fighting game on the PS4, and the Ultimate version competes for the same crown on the PS5. Slowing things down from the previous games, the combat is vicious, tactical, and difficult to master while still being relatively accessible.
MK 11 offers an endearingly cheesy story mode that should keep people who are only interested in the game’s single-player content entertained for a good few hours. For those who want more, an active multiplayer scene awaits.
The Artful Escape
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
5 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Platformer |
Developer |
Beethoven & Dinosaur |
Release Date |
January 25, 2022 |
Francis is expected to follow in his uncle’s big footsteps and become a folk singer. However, Francis prefers to shred than politely strum, and this internal conflict fuels The Artful Escape. A day before he is set to take the stage at a music festival for the first time, Francis is whisked away on an intergalactic journey by a strange sentient brain. As he visits gorgeous and peculiar worlds, Francis gradually breaks free from his own self-doubt.
The Artful Escape is a simple platformer that does not offer much in the way of challenge or innovation; however, the gameplay accentuates Francis’s story well. More importantly, players can press one button to unleash a few sweet licks on a guitar.
Ghost Of Tsushima: Director’s Cut
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
25 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Action-Adventure, Open-World |
Developer |
Sucker Punch Productions |
Release Date |
August 20, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Talk about a fantastic way to conclude the PS4 era. Ghost of Tsushima is a majestic open-world action game that expertly blends visuals, story, and gameplay to create an experience that feels complete. Inspired by the Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island in the 1270s, the eponymous ghost refers to Jin Sakai, a samurai who seeks to free his home and regain his honor.
Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut packages the base game with the Iki Island expansion, adding roughly 10 hours of content to what is already quite an expansive campaign. Except for its plot, the DLC is of mostly high quality, and the same could be said for the Legends multiplayer mode.
Deliver Us The Moon
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
5 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Adventure |
Developer |
KeokeN Interactive |
Release Date |
October 10, 2019 |
Amazon Listing Page |
With Earth stripped of natural resources, humans turned to the moon for assistance. This led to the discovery of Helium-3, an isotope that has solved humanity’s crisis; however, when the machine that sends the energy to Earth stops transmitting, an astronaut is sent to the moon to hopefully fix things.
Deliver Us the Moon has a fascinating premise loaded with tension since this is an end-of-the-world situation, and the protagonist’s isolation adds to the narrative’s gravitas. The gameplay mostly consists of exploration and puzzle-solving. Although the latter does not offer much in the way of challenge, the puzzles are well throughout and engaging. Ultimately, Deliver Us the Moon is a story-driven experience, and the game does not drop the ball in that area.
Wreckfest
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
18 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Racing, Vehicular Combat |
Developer |
Bugbear |
Release Date |
May 4, 2021 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Modern destruction derby games are, sadly, in short supply. Twisted Metal has been dormant for a decade, the last good FlatOut game came out in 2008, and Burnout has been reduced to a fleeting memory of a bygone era. Mad Max was one of the best vehicular combat games of the 2010s, and driving is just one (awesome) part of a larger whole in that title.
Since debuting in 2018, Wreckfest has established itself as the default modern vehicular combat game due to a lack of competition. However, if vehicular combat were still an active genre, Bugbear’s release would have risen to the top regardless as it is simply that fun of a game.
What Remains Of Edith Finch
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
2 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Adventure |
Developer |
Giant Sparrow |
Available With PS Plus Extra |
Yes |
Debuting in 2017 on PC and PS4, What Remains of Edith Finch made its way to the PS5 in July 2022. Short but unforgettable, Giant Sparrow’s game packs plenty of depth into its runtime. The eponymous character takes a harrowing trip through history while visiting her family home. Suffering from a curse that permits only one member of the Finch household to live at a time, the family has suffered tragedy after tragedy, and Edith will learn about all of them.
What Remains of Edith Finch can be described as a walking simulator, which means the gameplay largely revolves around exploration. In this case, players investigate the large Finch estate in order to piece together the family’s legacy. Although there is an overarching narrative, each relative’s story almost works as a standalone short.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Approximate Game Length (Main Story) |
8 Hours |
---|---|
Genre |
Action, Open-World |
Developer |
Insomniac Games |
Release Date |
November 12, 2020 |
Amazon Listing Page |
Miles Morales builds upon 2018’s stellar Marvel’s Spider-Man; in fact, the two releases are so similar that the spin-off can feel a bit like an expansion. That said, the game’s fundamentals are so unbelievably strong that they help nullify these criticisms.
As the titular hero, players get to swing around New York City during Christmas, all while they work through a deeply personal storyline that does a brilliant job of endearing Miles Morales to people unfamiliar with his comics. Like Marvel’s Spider-Man is one of the strongest PS4 titles on Sony’s subscription service, Miles Morales is among the best PS5 games on PS Plus Extra.
